Kokomo Drug & Alcohol Rehab, Detox & Treatment Resources

There’s a lot of rich history and legend surround the 13th largest city in Indiana. Kokomo is the Howard County Seat. Kokomo is known as a ‘City of Firsts,’ due to the multiple technical and engineering advancements that involved the vast natural gas reserves which fueled several industries that call the Kokomo home. The Peru Miami Tribe was indigenous to the area that is now Kokomo. The legend goes David Foster named the city Kokomo (means black walnut) after the “orniest Indian on earth’’ for the ‘’orniest place on earth.’’

A citiy’s success doesn’t make its inhabitants immune from the plague of alcohol and drug abuse that is spreading across the United States at alarming rates. Substance abuse is at the crux of a nationwide epidemic. All throughout the country, people are suffering due to the use of both illegal substances like heroin and crack and the misuse of legal substances like alcohol and prescription drugs.

Fortunately, there are many helpful resources available to those who would like to seek treatment for alcohol or drug addiction.

Alcohol & Drug Rehab Centers in Kokomo, Indiana

There are three, main categories in which treatment programs for substance use disorders can be identified as residential, partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment centers. These primary types of treatment will include: detoxification stage, individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group counselling and preparation for membership in an aftercare group. There are many differences between these types of treatment and they’ll offer a range of services within each individual clinic. Let’s discuss the variances.

Kokomo Residential Treatment Programs

Residential treatment programs are also named retreat-based and inpatient care. During a retreat-based recovery plan the patient will live at the facility until the medical and psychiatric staff approve for the participant to return to their home environment. Inpatient programs offer a sanctuary for participants to renew their health with the tools and amenities necessary for this endeavor.

Kokomo Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial hospitalization programs are the halfway point between retreat-based and outpatient care. Participants remain housed by the clinic during a specified phase of recovery. Typically, partial hospitalized patients remain at the facility throughout the detoxification stage of rehabilitation. Afterward the patient returns home and commutes for daily treatments.

Kokomo Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient treatment programs are useful resources for the patient who cannot take time away from their career, families or education to pursue their health goals. The flexibility of an outpatient treatment program is useful, but the lack of protective environment and concentrated focus on well-being cannot be imitated by this type of care.

The type of treatment program you chose to pursue doesn’t matter as much as acknowledging and understanding the true nature of substance use disorders. This chronic disease will demand periodical evaluations and possible returns to treatment. Residential treatment programs do offer a type of sanctuary that cannot be replicated while enabling people and circumstances remain in your everyday life.

Kokomo Drug and Alcohol Detox Centers

If you want to recover, you’ll have to purge the toxins from your body. Here’s where it gets tricky. It’s possible to go through the discomfort of detox, without experiencing any healing. This is due to the complexity of the disorder. Alcohol and narcotics abuse is a chameleon and the illness changes depending on the person who struggles with it. Psychiatric science believes this disease has roots in heredity, environments, accessibility, trauma and other health conditions. There isn’t a cure for substance use disorders, but rehabilitation is possible.

There are detox centers which focus solely on removing the chemicals from your body, but this method frequently fails to help the patient in the long-term. This is because sobriety is a way of life. Patients must learn to cope with the emotions, thoughts and actions which exacerbate their illnesses. Recovery begins internally, when the patient is capable of recognizing the factors keeping them trapped in the cycle of alcohol and drug misuse.

Look for a treatment program that approaches recovery through a myriad of options and gives you the tools necessary to be successful in your recuperation and well-being.

Recovery Meetings Near You in Kokomo

Due to the chronic nature of substance use disorders you may need to monitor, evaluate and treat your illness for the time being. You can’t stay in the confines of a retreat-based sanctuary for the rest of your life. Eventually you’ll need to explore the world from a sober perspective, but you’ll still need support to help you through the challenges and victories of recovery. You’ll find an encouraging community in aftercare programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous is the most popular self-sustaining, non-profit fellowship for people who want to control their dependence on alcohol. AA is an iconic aftercare institution with humble origins. In 1935, Dr. Bob Smith and Bill Wilson were both fighting their misuse of alcohol when they drafted the 12 steps and inspired the 12 traditions that are practiced all over the globe today. Members are encouraged to find a sponsor for additional support and attend meetings as frequently as needed. Participants take turn issuing testimonials to the group and discuss their progress along the 12 steps.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous is a sibling fellowship for people who want to manage their misuse of narcotics. NA members take the 12 steps and honor the 12 traditions essential to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Participants are encouraged to find sponsors and share their accounts regarding their progress through testimonials. There’s literature to help you learn more about the 12 steps and 12 traditions which involve methods for members to remain on the path to recovery. While Narcotics Anonymous has a spiritual foundation like AA, the Anonymous non-profits refuse to affiliate with any organization or faith that leads to excluding anyone who needs the program.

SMART Recovery Meetings

SMART Recovery is a newer form of aftercare fellowship. Instead of employing a spiritual bed rock, SMART Recovery meetings rely on scientific knowledge and rational thought. SMART is an acronym meaning Self-Management and Addiction Recovery Training. There aren’t any sponsors in SMART meetings and members engage in frank conversation instead of presenting testimonials to the group. There aren’t any sponsors and the use of labels like addict and alcoholic are discouraged. SMART Recovery meetings follow a four point program to help their members find and sustain a life-style balance that helps them lead healthy and productive lives. If you’re interested in SMART Recovery, get in touch with the facilitator prior to attending a meeting to insure the group is accepting new participants.

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon Meetings

Your family may not go through withdrawal or maintain their sobriety by the monitoring of a substance use disorder, but loved ones do witness the harm done to your health while you’re not in actively in treatment or sustaining your recovery.

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon meetings are supportive communities where your family and friends can come together to learn about the disease, find friends whom they can share their stories and dispel some of the stigma which surrounds the illness.

Participants in Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are asked to take the 12 steps and respect the 12 traditions. People from all walks of life are welcome at all Anonymous meetings. The only requirement for these meetings is to constructively cope with the substance use disorders of loved ones.

Substance use disorders are insidious diseases which convince the patient that’s contracted the illness into thinking their health isn’t at risk, that it’s a situation which doesn’t require medical and psychiatric interventions. Substance use disorders are a serious condition which demands intensive treatment. If you were diagnosed with Lymphoma and the doctor recommended you travel to Boston to receive specialized treatment which could save your life, you’d be on the first plane out of Indianapolis.

A sanctuary found within a residential treatment program provides you with the concentrated efforts of medical and psychiatric professionals and the space and subtle amenities necessary for this transformation. You deserve the best chance at recovery. If you can enroll in a retreat-based clinic, take the gift and be on your way to renewed well-being.
