Columbus Drug & Alcohol Rehab, Detox & Treatment Resources

Columbus is the 20th largest city in Indiana and is home to Vice President Pence. In 2008, National Geographic Traveler named Columbus, Indiana as number eleven on their list of U.S. historic destinations, citing that the town was “authentic, unique and unspoiled.” Columbus also won the America in Bloom award in 2006.

Despite Vice Presidential victories and the wealth of history in Columbus, the town and wider Bartholomew County is struggling with the onslaught of alcohol and drug abuse. The Columbus, Indiana Police Department started to witness a sharp rise in heroin and prescription opioid deaths with 3 fatalities in 2013 and another five deaths to accidental overdoses in 2014.

Those who are suffering from substance abuse issues don’t need to suffer any longer. Luckily, Columbus is full of helpful resources for those who want to get help for their drug or alcohol addiction.

Columbus, Indiana is mainly a rural area with a moderate population but the increase in substance use disorder among its citizenry is alarming.  It isn’t simply prescription opioids and heroin doing the damage either. In the time between 2002 and 2014, Bartholomew County authorities discovered and dismantled 636 methamphetamine laboratories.

Alcohol & Drug Rehab Centers in Columbus, Indiana

The differing types of treatment facilities for substance misuse can be divided into three categories: residential, partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment programs. These three designations will share the basic approaches to recovery with the detoxification stage, individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy and they will each prepare you for admittance into an aftercare fellowship group like Alcoholics Anonymous.

Columbus Residential Treatment Programs

Residential treatment programs are also called inpatient or retreat-based facilities. During inpatient treatment a medical and psychiatric team will observe you throughout the duration of your therapy at the clinic. They may prescribe a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help you through the discomfort of the physical withdrawal process and suggest you take part in activities like meditation and yoga.

Columbus Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial hospitalization programs share many characteristics with a retreat-based program but you will only be residing at the facility during detoxification or another (physician approved) phase of your recuperation. Afterward you will return to your normal living situation and commute to the facility for every required treatment.

Columbus Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient treatment programs are convenient types of rehabilitation therapy that do not possess a residential component to treatment. Outpatient treatment is suitable for individuals who cannot take the time off of work or leave their children or miss classes in order to pursue their well-being. That being said outpatient treatment programs do not provide the additional layer of protection against the elements conducive to a substance use disorder relapse.

Rehabilitation for substance misuse is a long process. A substance use disorder is a chronic condition and will require periodical monitoring and evaluation. Regardless of whether you decide to attend a retreat-based, partial hospitalization or outpatient treatment program it is important to know that help is out there and is widely available. All you have to do is accept the help offered to you.

Columbus Drug & Alcohol Detox Centers

Detoxification is often wrongly synonymous with rehabilitation, while cleansing the toxins from your system is crucial to the recovery process it is possible to go through the full detox stage without experiencing recovery. That is because substance abuse is an insidious, complex illness derived from a multitude of factors, including: heredity, genetics, environment, exposure and trauma.

Substance use disorders require a multifaceted and holistic approach to restore well-being. The endless choice of treatment options means you need to be prepared for the facilities that aren’t equipped to help you along this journey. Detox centers which possess a singular focus on simply getting the alcohol or narcotics out of your system are leading you down a false path. The root of this illness must be addressed in order for recuperation to take place.

Look for a facility that is realistic concerning their goals for you. A quality clinic should offer you different approaches to talk therapy, skill-building exercises and courses and a community where you can learn to depend on peers instead of substances during times of need. Be patient with yourself during this process.

Recovery Meetings Near You in Columbus

Aftercare may be the single most important factor in a successful rehabilitation. Sobriety means interacting with yourself, others and the world in a different way. Those necessary changes can feel overwhelming. Aftercare fellowships give you the guidance and tools in order to navigate that new world with confidence.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous is the most enduring and popular self-sustaining fellowship for substance misusers in the world. Originally, AA began in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. Since that time Alcoholics Anonymous has grown to host 60,000 meetings each year in over 100 countries. The popularity of AA may be attributed to the spiritual foundation of the fellowship that refuses to affiliate with any particular religion. Christians, Catholics, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs are all welcome at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The only qualification a potential member must have is the desire to stop misusing alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous is an offshoot of Alcoholics Anonymous but with a single twist: the group is geared toward individuals struggling with the misuse of narcotics. NA participants take the same 12 steps and respect the 12 traditions while engaging in another protective tool in sustaining sobriety: sponsorships. Sponsorships are special bonds between more seasoned members and those newer to the sobriety fold. Sponsor provide their sponsored member with round-the-clock support, joining them in attending meetings, finding new ways to cope with urges and basically being an encouraging element.

SMART Recovery Meetings

SMART Recovery meetings are a new addition to the mutual-aid fellowship scene. SMART is an acronym for Self-Management for Addiction Recovery Training. SMART Recovery meetings do not have a spiritual groundwork, instead they have opted for a rational foundation. SMART Recovery meetings don’t have sponsors and they discourage negative labels like alcoholic and addict. The primary authority for the SMART Recovery non-profit organization is scientific knowledge and logical thought. SMART Recovery follows a four point program in helping people learn to proactively cope with their substance use disorders.

  1. Find the motivation to remain sober.
  2. Manage impulses and urges
  3. Create a balanced response to the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that perpetuate your condition to aid in finding life-style equilibrium.
  4. Developing an appreciation for long-term satisfactions while regulating instant gratifications.

If you’re intrigued and want to learn more about SMART Recovery contact the group’s facilitator prior to attending a meeting to make sure the group is right for your recovery’s needs.

Recovery is going to demand a lot from you, but there are people all over the nation who want to help you manage your illness. A misnomer many people have about addiction and alcoholism is that it isn’t a serious disease. It is very dangerous and potentially fatal as described above by the shockingly high statistics. If you are seeking drug addiction treatment in Columbus, Indiana, looking at the addiction resources in surrounding communities may also be wise.
