We are fascinated with celebrities, from actors and singers to athletes and socialites. With the emergence and popularity of social media, celebrities share almost every aspect of their life. Almost. Like most of us, the rich and famous may only share with what they want their followers to see and choose to leave out the darkness behind the camera or keyboard.
The truth is that wealthy and famous people struggle with alcoholism and addiction issues like anyone else. Celebrities, like most people with addiction, can also get sober and lead healthy lives in recovery. It can be comforting and inspiring to know that people who appear to “have it all” still struggle with addiction and maintaining sobriety.
It’s a nice reminder that you’re not alone in recovery. If you are stuck in a cycle of addiction and believe that no one could relate to the way you are feeling, these quotes from sober celebrities can show you that you aren’t the only person struggling with addiction.
On Addiction
Recovery is a lifelong process and even celebrities have setbacks. Some celebrities may complete rehab and be able to maintain a sober lifestyle, while others have several setbacks and check-in and out of treatment facilities. Everyone has different experiences in addiction treatment and for some, it’s been more difficult to maintain sobriety.
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato, actress and singer, had been sober for six years until her setback in July 2018. She recalls, “I had a Sprite bottle filled with vodka and it was just nine in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at. … I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it. When I hit that moment I was like, it’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone.”
Daniel Radcliffe
Actor Daniel Radcliffe, most known for his role as Harry Potter, once shared this about his experience with alcoholism: “I was living alone, and I think I was really freaked out. I drank a lot. I think it was more to do with going out in public and having a battle within me of thinking no, I can have a totally normal life.”
Russell Brand
Russell Brand, actor and comedian, has been very open about his past addiction and advocates for addiction treatment, stating that it should be treated as a disease instead of crime. Brand made the following observation about addiction: “The priority of any addict is to anesthetize the pain of living to ease the passage of day with some purchased relief.”
On Addiction Recovery
While celebrities have stories about their addiction struggles, they can also relate to people in recovery. Here’s what a few have had to say about addiction recovery.
Eminem
Rapper Eminem has been open about his addiction to prescription pills and his methadone overdose in 2007. He’s been sober since 2009 and has learned how to his life without substances, saying “I couldn’t believe that anybody could be naturally happy without being on something. So I would say to anybody, ‘It does get better.’”
Rob Lowe
Actor Rob Lowe celebrates 26 years of sobriety. He turned away from alcohol in his 20s and has said that sobriety saved his life, “Being in recovery has given me everything of value that I have in my life. Integrity, honesty, fearlessness, faith, a relationship with God, and most of all gratitude. It’s given me a beautiful family and an amazing career. I’m under no illusions where I would be without the gift of alcoholism and the chance to recover from it.”
Jamie Lee Curtis
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis developed an addiction to painkillers after cosmetic surgery. She now says that getting sober has been the greatest accomplishment of her life, “My recovery from drug addiction is the single greatest accomplishment of my life … but it takes work — hard, painful work — but the help is there, in every town and career, drug/drink freed members of society, from every single walk and talk of life to help and guide.”
