Bloomington Drug & Alcohol Rehab, Detox & Treatment Resources

Bloomington, Indiana is different from the rest of Indiana due to its unusual limestone terrain that makes fissures, sinking streams, caves and springs common within the area. In 1818, settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee were so impressed by the wildflowers blooming in the region, they named the town Bloomington. Bloomington is known as the ‘Gateway to Scenic Indiana’ and is the seventh largest city in the state. Bloomington has been recognized by the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters as a Tree City for the past 32 years.

Yet, the evolving culture and green environment cannot protect Bloomington from the plague racing throughout the United States: alcohol and narcotic misuse. Large and small towns throughout the nation are becoming overwhelmed with the issue of substance abuse. If you’re fighting against a substance use disorder know you’re not alone. You can find resources for recovery that work for you in Bloomington.

There’s no guide that can make you admit the truth too yourself. Doing so, means you’re ready to move forward in recovery. A substance use disorder is a disease. It isn’t an indication of your values, ethics or morals. Substance misuse is a complex illness which requires long-term and multifaceted approaches to treatment. Generally, participants are hospitalized during the vulnerable detoxification phase of rehabilitation. Afterwards, you will return home to commute to the clinic for all prescribed therapies.

Bloomington Drug & Alcohol Detox Centers

Substance use disorders are insidious diseases. Psychological research has yet to define why humans develop this dangerous condition, but they do know it stems from aspects of your life like heredity, environment, trauma and access to the substance.

Detox has become synonymous with rehabilitation. However, it is possible to go through detox without experiencing recovery due to that detox treats only the symptoms of a substance use disorder.

Rehabilitation is a long-term, deviating course which requires your patience. Success isn’t defined by sobriety. Success is defined by the ability to return to recovery despite mistakes or relapses.

Avoid any facility making promises regarding instant recuperation or a life-long fix via the detoxification process. For real recovery, you will need to commit to a plan that helps you throughout your life.

Narcotics Anonymous is an answer to a need within the recovering community. As the proliferation of narcotics increased across the country, more individuals began to develop substance use disorders. Narcotics Anonymous has only one requirement to join this mutual-aid, non-profit fellowship and that requirement is a desire to stop misusing drugs. Participants take the 12 steps and try to follow the 12 traditions. Members take turn presenting testimonials to the entire group concerning their progress and setbacks along the staircase of the 12 steps. NA shares in Alcoholics Anonymous spiritual foundation but refuses to affiliate with any religion, faith or political institution as a way of retaining their inclusivity.

SMART Recovery is a mutual-aid fellowship with a scientific base instead of a spiritual foundation like the bedrock found in Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. SMART is an acronym for Self-Management and Addiction Recovery Training. There are four main points in the SMART Recovery program:

  1. Developing and enhancing new methods to motivate your-self to stay sober.
  2. Manage impulses.
  3. Cope with the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that exacerbate your substance use disorder.
  4. Find a life-style balance between instant gratifications and long-term enjoyments.

If you’re interested in joining a SMART Recovery group, get in touch with the facilitator to make sure the meeting is accepting new members and is appropriate for your recovery.

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon Meetings

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon were created to help your loved ones cope with the reality and consequences of this disease. Al-Anon meetings are for people who love someone fighting with an alcohol use disorder. Nar-Anon is for the family and friends of those struggling with a narcotic use disorder.

The stigmas and misinformation surrounding substance use disorders are slowly dissipating in the United States. Yet, groups like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are keys in helping people understand the truth about this illness and why people contract it. Al-Anon and Nar-Anon follow the same principles found in the 12 steps and 12 traditions of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. The only requirement for attending a meeting is to need the community to help cope with a loved ones’ illness.
